Tori Shoemaker
The 2024 student speaker will be Tori Shoemaker who is graduating with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in interdisciplinary studies.
Student award recipients
The 51风流官网 will honor Nolan Earnest, Janelle Pootoogooluk and T. Womack on May 3 as its outstanding undergraduate degree recipients for 2024.
Earnest will receive the Marion Frances Boswell Memorial Award, which recognizes an outstanding bachelor鈥檚 degree candidate. Pootoogooluk will receive the Joel Wiegert Award, which recognizes an outstanding associate degree candidate. Womack will receive the Gray Tilly Memorial Award, which recognizes an outstanding nontraditional graduating candidate.
Nolan Earnest
Earnest will receive a bachelor鈥檚 degree in film and performing arts and plans to pursue a career in filmmaking. He participated in and directed many theater and film productions, including documentaries for 51风流官网 Upward Bound and the Center for Innovation, Commercialization and Entrepreneurship. He was president of the 51风流官网 Film Club and vice president of the Climate Club. As a student athlete, Earnest served as the 51风流官网 cross-country running team captain for two years and was named to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference all-academic team three times.
In her nomination letter, Maya Salganek, chair of the Department of Theatre and Film, wrote that Earnest 鈥渉as been an integral component鈥 in the film and performing arts programs, 鈥渨hile also being committed towards his own diverse interests.鈥 She added that he has 鈥渞allied people together and developed a positive community of creative intellectuals. Nolan has become a role model for many students within our program and beyond.鈥
Janelle Pootoogooluk
Pootoogooluk will receive an associate of applied science degree in applied business. Originally from Shishmaref, she has received occupational endorsements from the 51风流官网 Northwest Campus in Nome and the 51风流官网 Community and Technical College. She is the first person in her family to earn a college degree, and she currently works as a family services intake specialist for Tanana Chiefs Conference.
Kait Hazard, assistant professor of applied business and accounting at CTC, wrote in her recommendation letter, 鈥淛anelle's academic achievements stand as a testament to her hard work, discipline and eagerness to learn. Despite the demands of being a full-time employee, a dedicated mother to four daughters and a part-time student, Janelle has consistently excelled in her studies. Janelle's story is one of remarkable achievement and inspiring strength.鈥
T. Womack
Womack will receive a bachelor's degree in film and performing arts with a concentration in film. A professional artist, vocalist and actor, she participated in numerous on-campus film and theater productions. She volunteered with the Nanook Diversity and Action Center, the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra and the Tanana Valley State Fair. She served as 51风流官网 Spanish Club president and has written for Sol de Medianoche, Alaska鈥檚 bilingual English-Spanish newspaper.
Womack returned to college after years of life experience, wrote Carrie Baker, associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts, in her letter of recommendation. 鈥淪he has embraced this challenge and attacked her college career with gusto and enthusiasm,鈥 Baker said. Womack鈥檚 spouse, Bryant Womack, wrote, 鈥淲ith a subtle sense of righteous indignation, she champions those who need a friend to talk to, a shoulder to cry on, and a reaffirmation each person is someone especially unique that the world cannot do without.鈥
Honorary degree recipients
Honorary doctorates will be presented to Della Sdaahlk鈥檃wa谩s Cheney, Neal Fried and Mead Treadwell. Honorary doctorates recognize recipients鈥 lasting contributions to the state and nation, and significant achievements in recipients鈥 respective disciplines.
Della Sdaahlk鈥檃wa谩s Cheney
Master weaver and Indigenous knowledge bearer Della Sdaahlk鈥檃wa谩s Cheney will receive an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree. Born and raised in Kake, she learned the art of weaving and the importance of sharing traditional knowledge from her grandmother. Cheney has practiced and taught weaving for decades, combining ancestral wisdom with contemporary concerns about environmental stewardship. She has documented her knowledge through photos and videos, and in 2017 published a book, 鈥淲eaving Our World.鈥 Cheney has received many awards, including the Alaska Federation of Natives鈥 Culture Bearer Award, the Juneau Arts and Humanities Council鈥檚 Mayor鈥檚 Award and the President鈥檚 Everyday Hero Award from the Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska. She was executive secretary in the Office of the Governor, tribal administrator for the Qutekcak Native Tribe, cultural educator at Floyd Dryden Middle School and external relations coordinator for Sheldon Jackson College. She completed the Community Fellows Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Neal Fried
Alumnus Neal Fried will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. Born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Vienna, Fried received a bachelor of business administration in economics from 51风流官网 in 1978. He served as an economist for the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development for 45 years, producing vital data on employment, economic forecasts and labor trends for the State of Alaska. Fried is widely recognized for his insightful analysis of the state's economy, labor force and key industries, including oil and gas, construction, the military, and health care. Fried wrote many articles for Alaska Economic Trends and presented at numerous conferences, developing a reputation for his ability to distill complex data into understandable and engaging information. Alaska state Sen. Click Bishop, a former state labor commissioner, wrote in his nominating letter, 鈥淣eal Fried is the EF Hutton of Alaska. When Neal speaks, everyone listens. He鈥檚 that good. He鈥檚 that dependable. He鈥檚 that solid.鈥
Mead Treadwell
Mead Treadwell will receive an honorary Doctor of Science degree. Treadwell has been an outspoken advocate for Alaska, 51风流官网 and Arctic research on local, national and international platforms for more than 45 years. He served as lieutenant governor, chair of the U.S. Arctic Research Commission and deputy commissioner of Alaska鈥檚 Department of Environmental Conservation. He co-founded the Woodrow Wilson Center鈥檚 Polar Institute and the Prince William Sound Science Center, and he directed the Institute of the North. He pushed for Arctic Ocean shipping safety and reliability rules, research to preserve Alaska Native languages and an Arctic human health research plan. Treadwell helped establish a permanent advisor on polar regions in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and was instrumental in securing construction of the research vessel Sikuliaq, which 51风流官网 operates. As an author, investor and lecturer, Treadwell focuses on strategic and defense issues facing Alaska and the Arctic, managing Alaska鈥檚 shared resources, and integrating Arctic transport and telecommunications.
Meritorious Service Awards
Sarah Keller and Meg Nordale will receive Meritorious Service Awards. Meritorious Service Awards recognize significant public, academic, volunteer or philanthropic service to the university or an Alaska community.
Sarah Keller
Wildlife biologist and 51风流官网 alumna Sarah Keller has supported the university and the community of Fairbanks for decades, both as a volunteer and a donor. She came to Alaska in 1978 to work on avian use of estuarine habitats. While working for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, she earned her master鈥檚 degree in natural resources at 51风流官网, graduating in 1990. Raising two daughters, she volunteered in schools, starting as an officer with Fairbanks Montessori School Board. For more than two decades, she helped organize Fairbanks school science fairs, recruiting 51风流官网 scientists to serve as judges. Keller is an officer on the KUAC Friends Group board of directors and volunteers on-air during fundraising events. She is a member of the UA Museum of the North advisory council. In addition to their longtime support of 51风流官网 athletics, Keller and her husband, Cary, have made a significant gift to UA鈥檚 teacher education programs.
Meg Nordale
Meg Nordale鈥檚 great-grandparents came to Fairbanks in 1908, and their descendants have been active in Alaska civic life ever since. In that tradition, Nordale not only personally contributes to the university but also leads Ghemm Co., a Fairbanks general contracting firm that has been a corporate donor since the 1970s. Nordale joined Ghemm in 1994 after a career in insurance and risk management and became the firm鈥檚 president in 2015. That same year, she served as president of the Associated General Contractors of Alaska. Nordale serves on the 51风流官网 chancellor鈥檚 board of advisors and currently chairs the UA Foundation鈥檚 board of directors. She recently led a statewide committee of academic and industry experts seeking to enhance construction management training to meet Alaska鈥檚 workforce demands. She is an active KUAC volunteer, and Ghemm provides matching gifts to the station during biannual fundraising events.

Tasina Luta Win (Marsha Jean Thomason-Oss)
The 2023 student speaker will be Tasina Luta Win (Marsha Jean Thomason-Oss) who is graduating with an associate degree and a bachelor鈥檚 degree in interdisciplinary studies.
Student award recipients
The 51风流官网 will honor Kalen Moore-Thomas and Riley von Borstel on May 5 as its outstanding undergraduate degree recipients for 2023.
Kalen Moore-Thomas
Moore-Thomas will receive the Joel Wiegert Award, which recognizes an outstanding associate degree candidate. Von Borstel will receive the Marion Frances Boswell Memorial Award, which recognizes an outstanding bachelor鈥檚 degree candidate.
Moore-Thomas earned an Associate of Arts in December and is now pursuing a bachelor鈥檚 degree in applied management.
鈥淜alen has worked extremely hard to earn his associate degree and graduate summa cum laude,鈥 wrote Montana Goss, Student Support Services interim associate director, in a nomination letter. 鈥淗e is a very welcoming and friendly person who, despite hardships growing up, has persevered to become an outstanding member of his community.鈥
Moore-Thomas volunteers his time to community organizations, including the Fairbanks Community Food Bank and Santa鈥檚 Helpers. He is self-employed and owns an entertainment business, 907 Foam Flingers, which caters activities and events for children, adults, the military and corporate team building.
Riley von Borstel
Von Borstel will receive bachelor鈥檚 degrees in justice, political science and performing arts, with minors in social work, psychology and creative writing.
鈥淩iley is a shining example of a well-rounded, community-minded, multitalented 51风流官网 senior who, I have no doubt, will be a leader in Alaska,鈥 wrote Carrie Baker, associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts, in a letter of recommendation.
Von Borstel is a student ambassador and a member of the 51风流官网 Honors College. She served two years as president of the Associated Students of 51风流官网 and on numerous boards and committees at 51风流官网. She has been cast in leading roles in three Theatre 51风流官网 mainstage productions and completed internships for three organizations during her college career: U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski鈥檚 office, the 51风流官网 Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities and the Fairbanks Office of Public Advocacy.
Honorary degree recipients
Richard Chalyee 脡esh Peterson and Helen (Dick) MacLean will receive honorary doctorates, which recognize recipients鈥 lasting contributions to the state and nation, and significant achievements in their respective disciplines.
Helen (Dick) MacLean, Doctor of Education
Helen (Dick) MacLean will receive an honorary Doctor of Education degree. She was born in 1945 in a tent at spring camp and grew up in Lime Village, which is located along the Stony River in Southwest Alaska. Elders trained MacLean in the Dena鈥檌na language, and she was charged as a young girl to be a culture bearer. For decades, MacLean has worked with students of all backgrounds, from preschoolers to college students. She is a master instructor of the Dena鈥檌na language and has a long history of working with doctoral students as a mentor and advisor. She was the primary instructor in two films, 鈥淟iving Dena-ina鈥 and 鈥淒ena鈥檌na Birch Baskets.鈥 She has served as an elder advisor to 51风流官网鈥檚 rural development seminars and has been vital in developing Dena鈥檌na curriculum for university courses. She is considered the most skilled living Dena鈥檌na first language speaker and is known for her ability to bridge Western pedagogy and Indigenous ways of knowing.
Richard Chalyee 脡esh Peterson, Doctor of Laws
Richard Chalyee 脡esh Peterson will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. He is Tlingit from the Kaagwaantaan clan, Eagles Nest house, and a lifelong resident of Southeast Alaska. He grew up in Kasaan, a community on Prince of Wales Island, and became the youngest mayor in Alaska in 1997. He has served as president of the Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska, a federally recognized tribe in Southeast Alaska, since 2014. With a strong background in public service and entrepreneurship, he leads the largest regional tribe in the state with a focus on economic development, tribal sovereignty and community sustainability. His innovative approach to supporting Southeast Alaska communities through the COVID-19 pandemic has been adopted and recognized as a template for best practices in tribal disaster response by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Meritorious Service Awards
Joan Braddock, Carl Benson, Jason Gootee and Ron Inouye will receive Meritorious Service Awards, which recognize service to the university or an Alaska community.
Joan Braddock
Microbiologist and 51风流官网 alumna Joan Braddock has been a part of the 51风流官网 community for more than four decades. She earned her doctorate in oceanography from 51风流官网 in 1989 and joined the faculty the following year. Her scientific research focused on bioremediation of environmental contaminants, especially petroleum. Throughout her career, she served as a professor and then dean of the College of Natural Science and Mathematics. She retired with emeritus status in 2009. In addition to being a donor and consistent volunteer at the university, Braddock has returned twice to provide temporary leadership to units with vacancies: once as interim dean of the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences and another as director of the University of Alaska Press.
Jason Gootee
Alumnus Jason Gootee has remained an active part of 51风流官网 since he graduated in 2005. He is a past president of the 51风流官网 Alumni Association Board of Directors, currently chairs the 51风流官网 Chancellor鈥檚 Board of Advisors and serves as a director on the University of Alaska Foundation Board of Directors. Gootee, who is Moda Health鈥檚 vice president for sales and strategic marketing development, lives in Oregon with his wife, Katie, and their four children but returns frequently to Fairbanks. He is an avid hockey fan and, together with his father, established the Gootee Family Hockey Scholarship to support 51风流官网 student-athletes.
Ron Inouye
Ron Inouye has served the university for many years as both an employee and an advocate. His university career started in 1970 as an instructor at the Ketchikan Community College. Prior to his 17 years at the Rasmuson Library鈥檚 Alaska and Polar Regions Collections, he also worked at the 51风流官网 Center for Northern Educational Research. At the library, many of his years were dedicated to indexing Alaska鈥檚 periodicals. Today, the index is widely used by historians, researchers and students. During his time there, he also served as the interviewer for numerous oral history recordings. Inouye is a philanthropist and volunteer for numerous university and community organizations, serving with the Friends of the University of Alaska Museum of the North and the Rasmuson Library鈥檚 Rare Book Endowment Committee.
Carl Benson
Professor emeritus Carl Benson has been associated with 51风流官网 for more than 60 years. His career as a researcher and professor of geophysics and geology has been marked by significant contributions to snow and ice science in Alaska, Greenland and Antarctica. He taught and mentored some of today鈥檚 leading scientists in the field. He worked at the university from 1960 until 1987, including a three-year term as chairman of the Department of Geology and Geophysics, and has continued his research, teaching and service long after retirement. He continues to give guest lectures and attend graduate student thesis and dissertation defenses. He and his wife, Ruth, are donors, volunteers and participants in the 51风流官网 community. Outside 51风流官网, he is active in civic issues, sharing information via public testimony and newspaper columns.

Speakers and honorary degree recipients
The keynote speaker for commencement 2006 was Rutgers University Distinguished Professor and noted biologist Joanna Burger. She is one of two people who received honorary doctoral degrees during 51风流官网鈥檚 84th commencement ceremony. The second honorary degree went to the late Sir Nicholas John Shackleton, an internationally known earth scientist. Honorary degree recipients are chosen both for their lasting contributions to the state and nation and for significant achievements in their respective disciplines.

Meritorious service award recipients

The keynote speaker for 51风流官网's 83rd commencement ceremony was cultural anthropologist, writer and radio host Richard Nelson. The 2005 class speaker was petroleum engineering bachelor's degree candidate Phillip Tsunemori.
Honorary degree recipients are selected for significant achievements that bring distinction to their academic or professional careers, and for their lasting contributions to the state and the nation. The 2005 recipients were retired Maj. Gen. Jake Lestenkof, Alaska Constitutional Convention delegate and newspaperman George Sundborg, fisheries and wildlife biologist Jim Rearden, and journalist and author Stanton H. Patty.
