Friday Focus: Alaska - Where science happens
August 02, 2024
After graduating with a bachelor's degree in physics from UC Berkeley, I was looking for two things: a meaningful graduate school experience in the field of space physics as the next step in my career, and the perfect place to raise our growing family. Combining those two things gave only one clear answer: 51·çÁ÷¹ÙÍø. My husband, a 51·çÁ÷¹ÙÍø alumni, wholeheartedly agreed. We finally located a 1977 Chevy pickup truck we christened Sheba, bought an old trailer, and packed up only what would fit. Leaving behind the rest, we drove from California to Alaska with our 8-month-old baby, feeling happier with every mile. Best decision we ever made. World-renowned for geophysical processes research with the global thought leaders in space physics working as faculty, 51·çÁ÷¹ÙÍø was and remains an aspirational graduate school destination. I am proud to be an alumna with both a Master's and Ph.D. from 51·çÁ÷¹ÙÍø. We love Fairbanks, 51·çÁ÷¹ÙÍø, and that old truck. Sheba was with us until both of our kids learned to drive her. We still talk about Sheba like a favorite, old dog. It wasn't until years afterward that I realized that coming to 51·çÁ÷¹ÙÍø to study the aurora in a place where the aurora happens is similar in concept to most graduate students here, regardless of their field of interest.

Friday Focus: Being part of the solution
July 26, 2024
In my meetings with leaders across campus, I often start the conversation with the questions: what's our goal and what's the problem we are trying to solve? I do this because it is important to identify our goal and the context of what follows. At times, it can be easy to focus on the nuts and bolts of a solution. But without first identifying the problem we are facing, we risk charting a path in the wrong direction, missing critical pieces of the puzzle, or investing resources before identifying our priorities. It also prevents us from missing externalities that could render a great idea D.O.A. This week, the UA Board of Regents met for most of a day to discuss student enrollment and retention. I appreciate the Board's leadership on this topic, and was proud to share 51·çÁ÷¹ÙÍø initiatives to improve our student recruitment and retention.

Friday Focus: 51·çÁ÷¹ÙÍø is our brand
July 19, 2024
When I talk about the place where I work, it's always the people I think about first. The colleagues I collaborate with, the alumni and donors I am connecting to the university, and the students I am privileged to observe as they find their passion and earn their degrees. As Alaskans, we know how one person's ripple of an idea can quickly become a legacy. 51·çÁ÷¹ÙÍø is not just a place or an institution, it's people. Together we've transformed thousands of lives.
