Taking college classes while still in high school is a major decision. Joining a dual enrollment program is a major decision. Discuss it with your parents and high school counselor to make sure you're ready to take on challenging — yet rewarding — opportunity.

Something else to ask yourself is whether you want to continue to college after graduation. A dual enrollment program can set you up for success, but you’ll want to take specific classes based on your individual goals.

Find the right program for you and explore classes

The 51·çÁ÷¹ÙÍø offers three different dual enrollment programs to accommodate any student — regardless of where they live in Alaska or how they learn. Each of 51·çÁ÷¹ÙÍø's dual enrollment programs offers something unique and has different requirements for eligibility. Choose the best program for your needs depending on how you want to attend classes. These include:

• — A virtual middle college for students who want to take online classes or can’t travel to campus.
• AHEAD — For students who want to be formally accepted to the 51·çÁ÷¹ÙÍø as a general studies major while still in high school.
• North Star College — A middle college sponsored by the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District, for students who want the full campus experience and can travel to campus for classes.

Explore your course options. Many students choose from our list of General Education Requirement classes, but students can enroll in any class they meet the prerequisite for. We are also happy to help you with your course selection. To receive high school credit, you will want to connect with your school district to get approval and determine what course(s) will fulfill high school credit.

Complete the dual enrollment application if you haven’t taken classes at 51·çÁ÷¹ÙÍø before

New students to the 51·çÁ÷¹ÙÍø should complete the . Select 51·çÁ÷¹ÙÍø as your campus, select a term (fall, spring or summer) and tell us about your academic history. If you can’t finish it all at once, you can always come back later.

If you're interested in joining North Star College, you’ll apply through the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District (FNSBSD) . North Star College will accept up to 90 juniors and 90 seniors for each school year.

To apply to the AHEAD program, you must complete the and submit it along with the (including the $50 application fee). The AHEAD program application requires your signature, as well as the signatures of your parent/guardian and high school principal or counselor. Send high school transcripts to:

Take your placement exams

You may need to take a placement exam if you're enrolling in a course that has a specific writing and/or math placement requirement. All math courses require the ALEKS math placement, and most science courses do as well. For writing placement, we require the EdReady writing placement or we can use SAT or ACT scores for placement. Both ALEKS and EdReady can be taken from home and are free.

Complete consent forms if under 18

If you're under 18, have your parent/guardian complete this consent form. They'll need to create a username and password to sign electronically. Or they can use this PDF version of the consent form and email a signed copy to uaf-registrar@alaska.edu. We won’t be able to register you for classes until this is received.

Register for classes

After receiving your admissions confirmation and University of Alaska ID number, set up your student account. Note that this is different from the account you created to apply to 51·çÁ÷¹ÙÍø. This is how you'll access any online courses you take, the student portal and your .

You can now register for class(es). If you'd like to take your classes through the Alaska Advantage program, here's a list of eligible courses. For all other courses, do a class schedule search in your account.

Registration for the fall semester begins in April. Spring semester registration begins in November. Summer semester registration begins in February. Registering early will ensure your space in class. 

Complete a FERPA release form

Completing a FERPA release form will allow the university to share 51·çÁ÷¹ÙÍø-related records (including billing) with your parents/guardians.

Order course materials and pay for your courses

The 51·çÁ÷¹ÙÍø Bookstore Bundle program makes getting your course materials more convenient and affordable. Students will automatically be enrolled in this program. The program provides all required textbooks, lab manuals and access codes. The program does not include consumables like lab kits. Order your required and/or course materials.

Also be sure to  by the . You can stay on top of your account balance at . The 51·çÁ÷¹ÙÍø does not mail bills or invoices, but does send notices to the student’s alaska.edu email account.

If a school district or home school network is paying the student’s bill, students or parents need to contact their counselor or teacher and the 51·çÁ÷¹ÙÍø Office of the Bursar Third-Party Billing office to ensure payment has been made.
