Poster Printing

1) General Information

The Department of Geology & Geophysics is equipped with a HP Designjet Z5200 Postscript large-format printer, located in 308a Reichardt Building.

We print on coated (C), heavyweight coated (HW) and glossy photopaper (HG) from HP. The coated paper is 36鈥 wide and commonly used for class posters, maps and charts, while the heavyweight coated and photo glossy paper comes a 42鈥 roll and is mostly used for poster presentation at meeting. The print quality of HG and HW are very similar and excellent. HG is slightly thicker than HW. Both are suitable for poster presentations at meetings. Certain transparent materials (e.g., Mylar) can also be printed on. However, we do not have these media in stock. Please consult with Jochen to see if it can be used on our printer before you purchase it.

Note, we do not have a poster-sized trimmer. You may need to trim the poster yourself after it is printed.

 2) File formats

Make sure you create your poster in the actual size it should be printed, i.e. 100 %! Scaling up to the requested poster size may result in blurred images.

PDF files are easiest to print. Their size is usually small enough. All major applications allow you to save your graphics as 鈥淧DF鈥 or 鈥淎dobe PDF鈥. However, should some problems arise during conversion it is helpful to have the original graphics file handy, so that we can attempt to print directly using that application.

Bitmap files (JPEG or TIFF) are an option. However, their file size are often much larger than for PDF鈥檚, so only use them if you cannot obtain satisfactory results with PDF or the original graphics software. We can print directly from vector graphics software CorelDraw 2019, Adobe Illustrator CS6, and the MS Word and PowerPoints

 3) Scheduling

Contact Jochen Mezger (474-7809, jemezger@alaska.edu) to inquire when the poster can be printed. Usually, a poster can be printed within two business days. You don鈥檛 need to be present for the printing if you can deliver the required files electronically. Printed posters can be picked up anytime during office hours. Be aware that at the end of semester or before a large meeting (AGU, GSA), the turnaround time might be longer. Note that during summer it might not be possible to print a poster if Jochen is not in Fairbanks. The preparation of a poster is solely the responsibility of the student, or their instructors and supervisors.
