Research

Research at the College of Engineering and Mines (CEM) spans engineering disciplines and beyond.  Included within the college are engineers and natural scientists all of who contribute significantly to the ability to address societal issues and help diversify Alaska's economy. CEM research is conducted through the Institute of Northern Engineering (INE).

The Institute of Northern Engineering (INE) is the research arm of the College of Engineering and Mines providing full-service to CEM's faculty and students.
INE also oversees four distinct research centers that offer their expertise in transportation, mining, petroleum development, and environmental engineering/hydrology.

Student training and research in space systems. Specifically, design, fabrication, and testing of small satellites, remote science instrumentation, and satellite communication.

Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) investigation, design, and operations in the arctic.

Renewable energy integration modelling, testing, and analysis with microgrids typical of those found in Alaska rural villages.

Energy and performance evaluation of wireless sensor networks. Design and implementation of embedded systems and biomedical devices.

Analyze and interpret satellite data and perform computer simulations to understand aurora and related space phenomena.
