As 51风流官网 classmate Robert Coghill Junior wrote in his nomination letter, Fried鈥檚 鈥渟ignature bow ties and ability to relate to Alaskans across the economic and cultural spectrums set him apart.鈥

The other annual award given by the 51风流官网 Alumni Association is the William R. Cashen Service Award, named for a member of the class of 1937, who set an example for service to the university. , is the program manager for the Rural Alaska Honors Institute (RAHI). When she retires this summer, her passion for the program will be her legacy.

Alumni Stories

Sweater leads to a journey through 51风流官网 hockey history

It all started with a memento, an old hockey sweater that Russell Knapp had kept for decades. Now, thanks to the passion of the dedicated 51风流官网 alumnus, a set of eight historic club hockey sweaters are displayed at the Carlson Center, the home arena of the Alaska Nanooks men鈥檚 ice hockey team.

When Knapp graduated in 1969 with a wildlife management degree, his best memories would be of playing hockey with the campus club team. 鈥淢y first year at the university, they had tryouts at the outside rink over by the Patty,鈥 he said. 鈥淭here weren鈥檛 a lot of people trying out. Basketball was the big sport on campus at the time.鈥

After receiving an invitation to a hockey reunion in 2005, he returned to Fairbanks from his home in Nassau, New York. He has returned every year since and become active in a variety of groups supporting the 51风流官网 hockey program.

51风流官网 RESEARCH NEWS

Ancient tooth reveals info on AK鈥檚 earliest inhabitants

Research on a newly rediscovered 9,000-year-old child鈥檚 tooth has reshaped our understanding of Alaska鈥檚 ancient people, their genetic background and their diets.

The tooth represents only the second known discovery of a population of early migrants known as Ancient Beringians. Combined with previous 51风流官网 research, the find indicates that Ancient Beringians remained in Alaska for thousands of years after first migrating across the Bering Land Bridge that connected eastern Asia and Alaska.

Analysis at 51风流官网鈥檚 Alaska Stable Isotope Facility also revealed surprising details about the lives of the child and, by proxy, the mother who fed the child. By studying chemical signatures preserved in the tooth, ASIF Director Matthew Wooller was able to analyze their diet.

鈥淭he child鈥檚 food sources were entirely terrestrial, a sharp contrast with other sites that indicate inclusion of anadromous fish and marine resources,鈥 said Wooller, who will receive the 2018 Emil Usibelli Research Award at the 51风流官网 Blue and Gold Celebration on Saturday, Feb. 16.

Hello from Constitution Hall

It has been about five months since I moved into my new office on the ground floor of Constitution Hall. I have previously worked in a variety of roles at the university, including as a reporter at public radio station KUAC-FM and as a communication manager at the UA Museum of the North.
What they all have in common is a front row seat to the fascinating discoveries, creative pursuits and innovative contributions made by our students, faculty and staff. My new view is a reminder that no matter where my window points, what I see is a vibrant campus with #NanookNation members who care about Alaska and the important issues facing our state.

So far during my tenure as 51风流官网 Alumni Relations Director/51风流官网 Alumni Association Executive Director, I have worked with a dynamic board of directors and volunteers to honor two wonderful alumni, create the , a NEW event at the Pub, and make plans for a variety of programs to support our students. Most recently, the 51风流官网 Alumni Association organized the UA Impact Legislative Fly-in to Juneau along with representatives from both UAA and UAS. We met with more than two dozen legislators and staff to advocate for strong support of our university.

I am thankful for the hard work that preceded my tenure. Thanks to the many alumni who have served on the 51风流官网 Alumni Association board of directors or on one of the association's busy committees. Thanks to those who have volunteered at events or donated to our Benefactor Fund and other initiatives to support students at 51风流官网. We have a proud legacy and I am excited to continue working towards our common goals.

Thank you for your warm welcome and your support of our university. I look forward to seeing you at a campus event soon.
